Hizumitas
Wata of Boris's signature fuzz — a faithful recreation of her personal Elk BM Sustainar.
The Hizumitas is a fuzz sustainar built with Wata of the Japanese band Boris, recreating her personal Elk BM Sustainar — an early-1970s Japanese Big Muff variant. EQD examined multiple triangle Big Muff variants and Elk Sustainar units before borrowing Wata's actual pedal to match the character of that specific unit: heavy saturation with a gritty edge, massive bottom, and surprising dynamic clarity. Three controls. Volume sits around unity at 9–10 o'clock. Sustain handles saturation — clockwise for more distortion and longer sustain. Tone is the unusual one: clockwise boosts bass, counterclockwise boosts treble, with dramatic character changes across the sweep. Works on guitar and bass. 9V DC, 10mA — EQD recommends a transformer-isolated supply.
